About Our Practice

Van Meter Pediatric Endocrinology, P.C. is a specialized pediatric endocrinology clinic dedicated to treating infants, children, and teens with hormonal, growth, and metabolic disorders. We frequently manage chronic conditions like Type 1 Diabetes, thyroid disorders, and growth hormone deficiencies.

Our team takes pride in mentoring the next generation of healthcare professionals. We understand the medical school application process and structure this gap-year position to provide you with deep exposure to clinical operations, patient care coordination, and the business side of medicine.

Why This Role is Perfect for Pre-Meds

  • Epic EHR Expertise: Gain hands-on mastery of Epic, the gold-standard Electronic Health Record system used by the nation's top medical schools and hospital networks. This skill alone is a major resume differentiator.
  • Specialized Clinical Exposure: Learn how chronic pediatric conditions are managed long-term, including tracking trends in HbA1c, growth charts, and hormone panels.
  • Medical Technology Insights: Gain familiarity with modern diabetes tech, including Continuous Glucose Monitors (CGMs) and insulin pump data.
  • Physician Mentorship: Work directly alongside our pediatric endocrinologists, with opportunities for clinical shadowing and letters of recommendation for high-performing team members.
  • The "Invisible" Side of Medicine: Master prior authorizations, medical billing codes, and health informatics—critical operational skills that will put you years ahead of your peers in medical school.

Key Responsibilities

  • Patient Operations (Front Office): Greet families, manage the check-in/check-out process, and maintain an efficient, welcoming clinic flow for children using Epic.
  • Care Coordination: Manage incoming referrals from pediatricians, schedule complex follow-up tracks, and handle multi-line phone communications with parents and pharmacies.
  • Insurance & Tech Navigation: Coordinate prior authorizations for life-saving medications (like growth hormones or insulin) and help download data from patient CGMs/pumps for provider review.
  • Medical Records Support: Maintain precise electronic charts within Epic, scan outside lab results, and ensure providers have all requisite clinical histories prior to patient encounters.
  • Medical Assistant (MA)
  • Room pediatric patients and record height, weight, blood pressure, and other measurements.
  • Prepare exam rooms and assist with clinic workflow.
  • Learn how clinicians evaluate growth, puberty, thyroid disorders, and diabetes.
  • Perform injections and STIM tests

Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree (B.S. or B.A.) in Biology, Neuroscience, Chemistry, Public Health, or a related pre-medical track.
  • Track: Intending to apply to Medical School (MD/DO) or a similar advanced health professions program (PA, NP, RN) during a 1- or 2-year gap period.
  • Skills: Exceptionally organized, empathetic, and patient. Excellent communication skills are required, as you will interact heavily with anxious parents and pediatric patients.
  • Tech-Savvy: Experience or familiarity with Epic is highly preferred, but a strong aptitude for picking up complex medical software quickly is required.
